Like your flowers need water, an engine needs oil! It’s an absolutely vital part of a vehicle’s operation. Without oil, things will go wrong, seriouly wrong. But what happens if you don’t have an oil change?

Oil acts as a lubricant for your engine. This lubricant slides in between the metal parts of your engine which rub together. You see, your engine is made up of a lot of fast moving parts, and we mean fast moving. When you rev your engine sitting at the lights to try and impress a girl who’s walking by, your revs go up to 25 thousand revolutions per minute! That’s fast. And as the third law of thermodynamics tells us, the faster something moves, the hotter it gets. And we mean hot; an average car engine can reach temperatures of up to two and a half thousand degrees! At this temperature, the metal can melt, and your engine can literally weld itself together. This is where the oil comes in. It allows those fast moving parts to do their job without setting your car on fire, which, I’m sure you’ll agree, is a good thing. This is why an oil change every 6 months or so is a great idea.

During an oil change, we’ll replace or clean the oil filter, getting rid of all the filth that’s built up, allowing the oil to pass through easier. Old oil picks up dirt and grime, and becomes less effective as a lubricant. That’s why, during an oil change we’ll also drain out all the old stuff and replace it with nice, new clean oil, making sure there are no leaks and you’re ready to get back on the road again.

So if you haven’t been for an oil change for a while, (we recommend every 750 kilometres), give us a call today and book one in. Our friendly mechanics will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
